Viewing Charge Data From the Charges Module
The Charges module displays charge data for only one patient at a time. From this module you can view, edit, copy, delete, or add to the list of charge transactions for the selected patient. A charge transaction is the combination of charges, modifiers, and diagnoses that represent the services provided to the patient during a visit. The Charges module opens with a Summary of visit days for the currently selected patient. Each visit lists the days included in that visit (for example, one day for an outpatient appointment, or multiple days for an inpatient visit), along with the corresponding charge transactions for each day of the visit.
If the patient has additional visits that are not included on the currently selected patient list, you can opt to show those visits on the Charges Summary, so that you can review whether charges have been entered yet for those visits, or to review the patient’s prior charge history on older visits. Tap
Settings
> Charges, and then turn ON the
Include All Visits option to show the additional visits and their charge status, or turn it OFF to hide them.
The Charges Summary screen is organized as follows:
•The patient heading row shows the selected patient’s name, age, gender, MRN, and location. Use this information to verify that this is the right patient.
•A visit summary row is displayed for each visit the patient has recently had. It contains the following information:
-The admission date/time for visits that have admit and discharge dates (such as inpatient visits), or an appointment date/time for visits with a scheduled date (such as outpatient visits).
-The discharge date/time if the visit is discharged.
-The location of the visit (which is struck through if the visit is discharged).
-The attending and scheduled providers associated with the visit (if both are present on the visit).
-An abbreviation that identifies the type of visit (such as IP for Inpatient or OP for outpatient).
•Below the visit summary row, additional rows for each day of the visit are displayed. For visits that consist of more than one day (such as inpatient visits), there are multiple rows. For visits that last only one day (such as outpatient appointments), there is only one row. For each visit day, the status of the charges for that day is displayed. For example, the status might be that no charges have yet been entered, or that one or more charges have been entered. The possible charge statuses that you might see are listed below.
-When no charges have been posted for a date, the row says “Add New Charge.” For example:
10/19 Add New Charge
-When you or another provider have posted a completed charge transaction for a date, the billing provider and charge information are shown as follows:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 99231: Subs Hosp Level 1
Diagnoses K27.1: Acute peptic ulcer with perforation
-When you or another provider have posted a draft charge transaction for a date, the billing provider and charge information are shown, along with a

icon, to indicate “Draft.” For example:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES

Charges 99231: Subs Hosp Level 1
Diagnoses K27.1: Acute peptic ulcer with perforation
-An (A) after any CPT code indicates that it was automatically added after the transaction was saved, as a result of the optional Automated Code Entry feature (see the PK Web help system). You can see the auto-added codes only if this feature is enabled in your user profile. For example:
10/19 JONES, CHARLES
Charges 99214: Office visit - established lev 4
S9441T: (A) Tech Charges: Asthma education by nurse
Diagnoses J45.901: Asthma with exacerbation
-A (P) after any CPT II code indicates that it was automatically added after the transaction was saved, as a result of the user completing a PQRS Clinical Metrics form (see the
Answering PQRS/MIPS Clinical Metrics Questions). You can see the auto-added codes only if this feature is enabled in your user profile. For example:

If you tap a visit day row that has charge information associated with it, a pop-up menu with the four options below is displayed. Tap a menu option to take an action for the selected visit day row.
•New: Add a new charge transaction for this visit day.
•Edit: Open this charge transaction for viewing or editing (if the transaction is still editable).
•Copy: Copy this specific charge transaction as the starting point for a new transaction (for the same or a different visit day). If you copy a charge transaction that has auto added codes (A) or auto-added CPT II codes (P), only the charges that were manually entered by the provider are copied (and not the auto-added codes).
•Delete: Delete this specific charge transaction. This action can be taken only if the transaction is still editable.
